North Carolina Labor Commissioner Cherie K. Berry recognized Rocky Mount and other regional businesses and their employees during the agency's annual safety awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 4 at the Carleton House in Rocky Mount. The Rocky Mount banquet is co-sponsored by the N. C. Department of Labor and the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce. The awards honored outstanding on-the-job safety achievements of each employer during 2001. Recipients are based in Rocky Mount, Tarboro, Halifax, Roanoke Rapids, Tillery, Whitakers, Weldon and Sharpsburg.
Berry reminded the recipients, "You have earned your way here. Good safety records go well beyond paper and stats. Safety is not a given. It is a culture. You are aware of that. You serve as a role model for other employers."
The department presents safety awards annually to firms that recorded no on-the-job fatalities. The companies maintained a perfect safety record during 2001 or recorded an occupational injury and illness rate of at least 50 percent below the statewide average for their particular industry group. The local recipients have met the stringent safety requirements necessary to achieve a safety award.
