AGENCY HONORS NASH/EDGECOMBE, HALIFAX EMPLOYERS FOR SAFETY EFFORTS
The awards honor outstanding on-the-job safety achievements of each company during 2000. Recipients are based in Rocky Mount, Pinetops, Tarboro, Halifax, Roanoke Rapids, Tillery, Whitakers, Weldon and Sharpsburg. The Rocky Mount dinner was co-sponsored by the N.C. Department of Labor and the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce. The banquet, began at 7 p.m., and was held at the Carleton House, 213 N. Church Street.
"Safety awards are earned," said state Labor Commissioner Cherie K. Berry. "They are not just given away. You have earned a safety award because of your dedication and hard work. Safety extends beyond today or tomorrow," she said. "It is a process that is always evolving." John H. Johnson of the state Division of Occupational Safety and Health (pictured at right with Safety Awards Coordinator Lafonda Mauldin, and Chamber President Charlie Glazener) was the featured speaker of the event. The department presents safety awards annually to firms that recorded no on-the-job fatalities. The companies maintained a perfect safety record during 2000 or recorded an occupational injury and illness rate of at least 50 percent below the statewide average for their particular industry group.

The local recipients have met the stringent safety requirements necessary to achieve a safety award. The safety awards are one of many events that the Chamber sponsors to showcase area companies and their hard work.
