Area Leaders Attend NCCBI Legislative Reception and Conference

Local leaders from the Rocky Mount-Nash-Edgecombe area (L-R, Chamber president Charlie Glazener, businesswoman Mary Wells, with Senator A.B. Swindell) recently attended the annual North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry reception and legislative conference in Raleigh. At the conference, the "state's Chamber of Commerce" presented its legislative agenda for the current General Assembly session. Participants also heard from key elected and cabinet government officials as to their issue perspectives from both the House and the Senate and the Democrat and Republican sides.

On February 21-22, area business leaders attended the annual NCCBI Legislative Reception and Conference to interact with state legislators, exchange information about critical issues, and establish priorities for the legislative program-of-work during the current legislative session.

Considered as being the state's Chamber of Commerce, NCCBI presented its committee reports on what are viewed as being the most important legislative issues for the coming years. Education captured the principal concentration with NCCBI's recommendation to "stay the course" and continue with many of the programs established during the Hunt administration for educational and family development.

Among the many agenda items prepared by NCCBI's seven working committees, included were a firm resolve to combat the mandated ergonomics standard, to improve the air and water quality throughout the state, and to continue support for the community college and university systems. Additionally, issues of focus were in sustained growth and planned development, healthcare economy, and a dramatic recovery in a failing transportation arena.

The Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce will follow some, not all, of the lead issues promoted by NCCBI in its effort to advance the best interests of the Nash and Edgecombe community. The Chamber is a principal advocate for legislative issues at the local, state, and national levels in representing its membership and served communities.
