History

Rocky Mount is uniquely situated in both Edgecombe and Nash Counties and boasts a temperate climate, scenic beauty, good abundant cropland and is steeped with significant origin.

It enjoys a rich history surrounding the banks of the Tar River where a massive stone ledge, originally known as "the rocky mount", forms the great Falls of the Tar River

Throughout its history, the Tar River has played a major role in the life of the area - from the founding of the community with the location of the first post office in 1816 and one of the first cotton mills in the state - Rocky Mount Mills, its strategic importance from the Civil War era to the present time, its impact on an entire community during a 500-year flood; the river's water was, and still is, one of our most precious and essential resources.
